NEWS: 7 October 2010 InText at Translation Forum Russia 2010

On September 24-26, Yekaterinburg welcomed dozens of freelancers, in-house translators and interpreters working for large industrial companies, universities and translation companies in Russia and abroad for annual conference Translation Forum Russia 2010. Representatives of InText (our CEO Stanislav Kalenyuk, our Marketing Manager Marina Bogdan, Senior Project Manager Kirill Fedotov and Project Manager Olga Fomenko) took a long trip to get to the capital of Urals, but it was surely worth the visit. InText Translation Company was also happy to support and become a sponsor of the event.

Program of the conference was intense, diverse and very interesting. There were workshops on translation and interpreting, presentation of useful translator's tools and software, sessions on marketing and market perspectives, which both translators and translation companies found insightful and inspiring if not urging. All the participants were positively impressed by level of organization and the content. Sessions and discussions were so numerous that the four of our representatives could not cover them all, so the review given here does not include all the program and speakers.

Our colleague Kirill Fedotov made a presentation on effective collaboration between suppliers and translation companies (Russian version). Some experts say that the number of translators will decrease in the years to come and shortage of qualified resources may become a serious obstacle on the way of a developing translation company. To strengthen up the position in the market of human resources, important steps should be taken immediately. We have analyzed what makes the company attractive for freelance translators. Round table on expectations of freelance translators and translation companies was scheduled right after. The discussion with Pavel Dunaev (Neotech) clearly outlining the expectations of translation company was well moderated and engaging.

A lot of debates were aimed at certification standards, their present and future impact on the Russian market of translations. Kseniya Vinogradova (Avanta Translating) and Miriam Lee (FIT, presentation 'The Future of Industry Standards: Do We Really Need Them and What Will They Be?') made very strong presentations on this topic. Both sessions were followed by round table discussions.

For freelance translators as well as to all people dealing with marketing, Doug Lawrence (Amicus TransTec) prepared a lot of simple but effective pieces of advice in 'How to Sell Your Services'. The presentation helps in creating a positive image in the web, finding and getting clients. The dark side of web community's influence on freelancers and the perils they may face was well described in the presentation by Ekaterina Ryabtseva (creator of one of the largest online forums for translators in Russia "Gorod Perevodchikov").

Some enjoyed the workshops and attended the conference to develop skills and qualification; some came to the conference to learn more on translation quality management and trends in the CAT tools technology. Aleksey Chernobay (Palex), Demid Tishin (All Correct Language Solutions) and Jost Zetzsche (International Writers Group) made strong presentations on innovations and solutions in QA and CAT tools. Some attended the conference to get a better scope of what is going on in the industry and listen to world experts, like Renato Beninatto making a presentation on '…Why Everything You Know About the Industry is Probably Wrong'.

Translation Forum Russia was surely well attended and welcomed in Yekaterinburg. InText sincerely hopes that this conference will keep growing and keep bringing professionals of the translation industry from Russian Federation, CIS and other countries together, and we are ready to support and contribute to this event in the future.

As usual, pictures and video from this event are available on flickr and youtube.
